take you places where history was made!

featuring The Woodruff-Fontaine House

Memphis has its share of ghost stories – creaking stairs, voices from nowhere and beings felt, but not seen. October is the perfect time to re-visit the unseen spirits and listen to their stories. Some ghosts you might encounter are:

  • Molly Woodruff, who occasionally makes her presence known at the Woodruff-Fontaine House
  • Mary, who still returns to the Orpheum to see the stars
  • Nathan Wilson, who died shortly after burying a chest of gold and before disclosing its whereabouts.

You’ll also hear about the ghost of Brinkley Female College and learn about the mysterious death of Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. You may even drive by Elmwood Cemetery, home of some beautiful Victorian tombstone art as well as four “gentleman ghosts.”

Those with additional time may want to spend a day or two in nearby Adams, where Tennessee’s most famous ghost taunted the Bell Family for years. That story is told in the recent film “An American Haunting.”

Shelby grew up in Memphis close to the First Assembly of God Church where both Elvis and the Blackwood Brothers worshipped. She remembers riding the streetcar and watching the iceman deliver ice in a horse-drawn wagon. She remembers one night at Rainbow Skating Rink when she refused to skate with a boy from Humes High because his hair was slicked back and he wore a leather jacket. Guess who that was! Even though she wouldn’t skate with him, Elvis later dated two of her friends. On a more serious note, she remembers Memphis on the day Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated and how that changed Memphis forever. Shelby is the quintessential southern belle with a sense of humor – she’ll charm your socks off!

“Somebody asked me what I missed most about Memphis and I said ‘EVERYTHING’.”
