See Memphis Launches
New African-American Memphis History Tour

Memphis has a rich African-American cultural heritage and history. From the days of slavery to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the present, our city has an important place in the history of our country. Our Memphis African-American History Tour has been improved to bring you first-person accounts what it was like to:

  • be here on the day Dr. King was shot,
  • visit the Burkle Estate to see where slaves hid out on the underground railroad,
  • and relive the birth of American soul music.

This tour includes visits to the National Civil Rights Museum, Slavehaven and STAX Museum of American Soul Music. We'll also drive by several Memphis landmarks, such as Mason Temple, Bountiful Blessings Church, and others. Our guides each bring their own unique experiences and flavor to our tours and will share with you their memories and stories surrounding the African-American history of Memphis.

Lunch at Four-Way Grill features classic soul food favorites like fried green tomatoes, fried catfish, and sweet potato pie. This historical restaurant was a popular meeting place for civil rights workers during the 60's.

Meet Your Tour Guide:

Nell Rodgers

Nell Rodgers has been a tour guide for over 20 years and has been with See Memphis since we started back in 1990. She is a "genteel Southern lady with a distinctive southern drawl" and can tell you all about the rich agricultural history of our area. Nell is also related to Ellen Davies Rodgers, whose family settled in Shelby County in the early 19th century with the help of the Native Americans. The Davies two-story log house, one of the oldest, fully-furnished houses in the county, is still a popular historical site on the outskirts of Memphis.

  • Wilson Pickett wrote "The Midnight Hour" in Memphis in the early 60's when he partnered with Booker T & the MG's. The Memphis Horns played on this record, too.
  • The first Holiday Inn opened at 4941 Summer Avenue in Memphis in August 1952
  • Memphis is the home of the first Greyhound and Continental Trailways bus lines.
